Professional Knowledge
Professional knowledge is the foundation of teaching practice.Members of the Ontario College of Teachers know the curriculum, the subject matter, the student, and teaching practice. They know education-related legislation, methods of communication, and ways to teach in a changing world.

Rationale

All of the activities I completed during this course have furthered my professional knowledge. Many have required to me become familiar with important “education-related legislation” and ministry documents. For example, for the media unit I identified overall and specific objectives before designing the lesson. The Social Science Curriculum summary also helped me become more familiar with the ministry objectives.

I have also chosen to include my learning styles activity and social skills mini lesson as examples of professional knowledge because they demonstrate knowledge which can be used in all subject areas and grade levels. In the OCT description of this standard there is a significant focus on motivating and accommodating students. The learning styles activity will motivate students because it is about the students themselves and how they learn. They are also more likely to be motivated because they can choose the kind of activity that best suits their learning style. The structure of the lesson ensures that “shared learning as well as individual learning occurs”. Finally, the student reflection sheet allows students to be a part of the assessment process.
